BYD Denies Motorcycle Launch Plans Amid Speculation

BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has dismissed rumors of entering the motorcycle market following the release of patent drawings that sparked widespread speculation. Li Yunfei, BYD’s general manager of branding and public relations, clarified on Weibo that the company is committed to its core businesses and has no intentions of manufacturing motorcycles. “We reiterate: BYD is focusing on its main businesses now and in the future, and has no plans to make motorcycles,” Li stated.

The rumors emerged after motorcycle design patent drawings were made public on September 10, showing that the patent is indeed owned by BYD. This fueled speculation that the world’s largest new energy vehicle (NEV) maker might be planning to launch a motorcycle line. Similar rumors surfaced in May, when images of electric motorcycles circulated on social media, but Li had already denied them, labeling the images as fake.

Although BYD has no plans to produce motorcycles, the company remains active in related fields. BYD Electronic’s OEM business and its battery arm, FinDreams Battery, are involved in the development of two-wheeler batteries. FinDreams announced on February 25 that it would leverage its passenger car battery technology to create safer, high-performance batteries for electric two-wheelers. This decision came after a tragic fire in Nanjing caused by an electric two-wheeler, which killed 15 people and injured 44.

FinDreams has pledged to work with various partners to develop safe two-wheeler batteries that can be used within buildings, prioritizing safety in the development of these technologies. While BYD is not directly entering the motorcycle market, its ongoing efforts in battery development suggest a growing focus on the two-wheeler segment.
